Breztri, Asthma & COPD
Jun. 23rd, 2024 11:20 amI've had severe asthma all of my life, and for all of my childhood it was basically uncontrolled because my Doctor couldn't find an inhaler that would work for me. So I went to the ER a lot, and SUFFERED every cold and allergy season, and basically couldn't play or be a kid outdoors for fear of having an attack and, like, dying. I was going through a salbutomol rescue inhaler every TWO WEEKS which is INSANE. Those things should last for MONTHS and I sucked them down like CANDY.
When I was 13-14ish everything changed because ADVAIR became widely available, and during one of my ER visits the Doctor there prescribed it for me. It was like a MIRACLE, suddenly within TWO DOSES I could BREATHE. So I made an immediate appointment with my family Doc to get a real script for it, and the rest is history. I was on Advair for basically twenty years with no problems, it was AMAZING.
AND THEN.
In December 2019, even before it was announced as officially being IN CANADA, I caught Covid-19 for the first time. At the time I was sick I didn't KNOW it was Covid, we figured that out later, but after it was all over with my lungs just weren't the same. I was always short of breath and my right lung in particular felt heavy and wet, though none of the scans and tests they did showed anything.
My Doctor started trying me on different inhalers, I've been on several since 2019, and none of them did any good. I also had Covid THREE MORE TIMES over the last few years, and each time my lungs came out more jacked than they were before. My Doctor started trying me on courses of antibiotics and steroids, but they didn't help either. I had forgotten, over the twenty years of having good lungs, what it was like not to be able to breathe, and trust me when I tell you it SUCKS. :<
Anyway, at my last appointment she asked how the latest inhaler was holding up and I told her not very well, as usual, so she gave me a bunch of Breztri samples to try.
AND LO AND BEHOLD ANOTHER MIRACLE MY LUNGS ARE LIKE 90% BACK TO NORMAL.
But the kicker is that Breztri is NOT an asthma inhaler, and is NOT (in capital letters) to be used to TREAT asthma. It's a COPD inhaler. Which means, because it's working so well, by logical thought processes, that I have fucking COPD. Which isn't actually a HUGE surprise given the number of times I've had Covid and the extreme damage it does to my lungs every time, but STILL. LIKE I NEEDED THIS, BODY. BOO.
At least I have something to treat it, now. :|
