Orillia Comicon 2024
Aug. 10th, 2024 06:01 pmOkay, SO. A little less than two weeks ago, Mom and Lee went out for a meal and when they came back Mom had a Perkolator with her because she wanted to show me the ad in it that was for "Orillia Comicon" and ask if I wanted to go. And I was like "uh. Yes, please?" AND THUS PLANS WERE MADE.
This morning I got up early to take my pills and ride out the lithium nausea before getting ready for the day and heading out. We got to the old skating rink before the Farmer's Market closed down for the day, so we did a loop of that before going inside to the Comicon. At the Farmer's Market I bought a tiny triceratops fidget toy, a water bottle holder (it's made out of neckties, it's actually a brilliant design!) and a little crochet Captain America BECAUSE CAPTAIN AMERICA. But like already shopping and we're not even in the con? I could see where this was going to go. XD
The Comicon was also holding a food drive for the local food bank, which wasn't NECESSARY for entry, but Mom and I went out last night and bought a bag full of foodstuffs to donate anyway; spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, three packs of rice and a box of crackers. I like to donate to the food bank because I've had to rely on them at times in the past, so it feels like taking it full-circle.
It cost $5 admission per person and "Comicon" was just a mid-sized dealer's room/artist alley combined, so basically we were there to shop and nothing else. OH except we watched Spider-Man dance! Our local Spider-Man cosplayer had been hired to like... walk around, take pics, and literally just dance off to the side so that was fun. There was a Deadpool to go with Spider-Man but he didn't dance which was too bad because Wade DEFINITELY would have been down with dancing with Spidey. lol
Anyway, we wandered around and I saw a LOT of things I wanted to buy (for myself and for other people.) In the end I bought a 3D printed Star Wars figure (he's a cross between Gorogu and the Mandalorian, he's really cute) for Dad for Christmas and a 3D printed rainbow phoenix for myself, because I have an emotional attachment to rainbow phoenixes because of Ombre. I also got two tiny squishy pink stuffed axolotls, one for me and one for Poe, though I don't know if Poe will even let me send theirs to them. I'm currently waiting to find out.
One booth had a Captain America Scentsy that I wanted SO BAD but it was $55 and I didn't have the money. Also Mom wouldn't buy it for me boo on her haha. There was also a BIG blue stuffed axolotl that I wanted, but that was also $55 so... nope. And there was a cardboard art print thing at one of the booths that had all the big iconic horror movie villains on it that was SWEET and only cost $35, but like... I literally have no wall space left in my room so it would just end up stacked in Jessie's room with all my other superfluous art that I currently have no room for. So.
For a dinky con buying room it wasn't bad. I saw a few things I wanted to get for Dad, a few I wanted to get for Trunks, and even a couple I wanted to get for Vina, but I just ended up with the one for Dad. I wish I'd had more money, I could have done half my Christmas shopping today.
Then after we left, Mom and I went to McDonald's for food before we came home. All in all it was a good time.
I really need to thank Mom again for taking me and coming in with me. I know she only went because she knows I'm into that kind of stuff, it's not really her cup of tea. She goes out of her way to do nice things for me sometimes, especially if I've been frustrated or irritable or upset lately and I want her to know I really do appreciate it.
I think next year, if I can catch it in time, and if Mom will help me, I might try to get a table to hock my wares. I can't afford Cottage Country Comicon but maybe Orillia Comicon is more affordable since they're run by different people.
