So I think I have officially decided that I'm going to segue out of fish and into axolotls. The only problem is that if I just wait it out for my fish to die off naturally, it could take a while. Some of them have like a 12-year lifespan. And I'm not going to KILL THEM just because I've outgrown tropical fish. I'm not a monster. So I'm going to have to rehome them on kijiji or something idk.
Like I said before, I will kind of miss Ciel, my rainbow shark, because he's fun to watch, he's got spunk, and I am growing rather fond of Tabby, my angelfish who keeps laying eggs like once a week and then going "fuck it" and eating them all herself. :| But I'm not really emotionally attached to them? I just kind of find them entertaining. And with the exception of Argent, my silver dollar, and Bissell, my pleco, the rest of them don't even have names. (I always named my goldfish, I got way more attached to them than I ever did/do to tropical fish.)
So I guess I need to take a head count of the cory catfish (I think there are six or seven?) and make up an ad, but I have to be very specific that I'm offering up JUST THE FISH and not the rest of the tank/set-up, because I NEED the tank and some of the set-up for converting into an axolotl aquarium.
I poked about kijiji and I MIGHT be able to get my axolotls there but there's no guarantee I could get a melanistic one and a leucistic one like I want. I guess I don't ACTUALLY mind what color morphs they are, really, I just like the idea of having a melanistic one and calling it Toothless and a leucistic one and calling it Sisu. *shrug* But the other color morphs are cute, too, and it's much cheaper to get them rehomed from kijiji than it is to buy them from a store.
I did send a message to A Lot'l Axolotls, which is a huge 'lotl breeder and seller here in Canada. They also sell all the supplies for 'lotls, and they'll ship everything, but I don't know how much their axolotls COST because there are no PRICES on their SITE, so I'm waiting for them to get back to me with quotes. Either way I'll probably be buying my hides and plants from them at the very least. Shipping will probably be a BITCH, though.
When I've rehomed the fish I need to completely empty and clean out the aquarium, scrub it and everything. And I won't be using any substrate for my axolotls, just bare glass, which they seem to do best on, from what I can tell? Either that or fine, fine sand, which can be a pain in the ass to clean. I can use plastic plants like I always do with fish, but I might try my hand at living ones for once? I haven't entirely decided yet. The problem is that I'm not sure they would get enough light where the tank sits in my room, but I guess if I try living plants and they don't survive I can always just go back to fake plants after all.
But other than that... I just need the proper filters and an aquarium fan (both of which I can get off Amazon), some hides and the right chemicals to treat the water. It doesn't sound too hard. And I HAVE wanted a 'lotl basically ever since I found out they existed. So. *shrug*
Maybe my project for September?
EDIT: Like, ideally I would be leaving the fish alone and just setting up a second tank for the axolotls BUT. *gestures wildly to lack of space* I mean. :|
