American Horror Story: Roanoke
May. 14th, 2024 10:55 amWell. I watched American Horror Story: Roanoke in probably RECORD time, I am BLOWING through seasons of AHS like CRAZY I really need the rest of them because I'm going to run out and then be sitting here like "now what." So Freak Show and Cult are still in the mail, as is NYC now, and I still need to order 1984 (if I can find it, when I was looking the other day I couldn't locate it anywhere), Double Feature and Delicate (which, again, is really new so might not be on DVD yet.) But GETTING THERE!!
Anyway, Roanoke!
Was good, but not as good as I had hyped it up to be in my mind, which is totally my own fault and not that of the show. I'm such a fan of the show-within-a-show trope I got SUPER excited for it and then it just couldn't measure up in some ways, so my bad. :|
The first half of Roanoke was really good and I loved the concept of the Roanoke colony having up and moved and how they explained the "disappearance" of the Roanoke colony from history. I also loved the Butcher and her character, she was really well done, as was the back-and-forth between the "real" people and the "actors". The torture and killing throughout the entire season was PHENOMENALLY done and period-accurate (I think), and that was really impressive. Made me cringe at times.
When it went downhill for me was the second half when the "cast" of "My Roanoke Nightmare" returned to the house for the second season ("Three Nights In Hell") because the new characters (the "actors") were just generally unlikable and over-the-top and it was basically a rehashing of the first half just with "different" people screaming and flailing and getting killed. And like why on EARTH, having survived that hell "irl", would Sidney/etc. (the "real" people) agree to go back there?? And during the Blood Moon no less?? Just for the chance to get back together with their former significant-other, in Sidney's case? NOT IN A MILLION YEARS. THAT'S JUST STUPID OH MY GOD.
But yeah, so basically the first half was ACES and the second half was just... boo. Not that the acting wasn't good, just the plot was lacking in that they just redid the plot from the first part, basically: EVERYBODY DIES!! (I did feel bad for the YouTubers who got split-staked and burned alive, though, they didn't deserve that.)
And then the last episode focused entirely on LEE, which sucked because she was the character I liked the least in the entire series. :|
Oh well. It is what it is! Not my favorite season but definitely worth watching, and I'll watch it again, too! Now I'm on to Apocalypse since it's the last one I have right now. Hopefully Freak Show and Cult will arrive soon so I can watch them as well. :D
EDIT: Freak Show just arrived in the mail! Now I'm just waiting on Cult and NYC. <3
