Demashitaa!
Alright, so today I downloaded and watched the second episode of Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z.
When I downloaded the first episode a few days ago, I was kind of like "...ehh." about it; the story and characters are so different that you can barely call it Powerpuff Girls at all. But having watched two episodes now, I'm finding it growing on me... I guess you just have to watch it as a completely sepparate show, and put all the original PPG storylines/characters out of your head.
First of all, the entire thing takes place in Tokyo, which is a big change in and of itself, since the original series took place in "Townsville". So the setting is quite different, just to start with.
The beginning of the first episode has Professor Utonium working with his son, Ken, and their digital (robot) dog, Peach, to research the mysterious Chemical X (in the original series, Ken and Peach simply didn't exist, though I'm somewhat relieved that Ken does, because in the promos and stuff it looked like they'd SD-ified the Professor. O_o;). Whilst working, they decide to take a snack break; Peach becomes very excited, and accidentally throws one of the snacks into the Chemical X... turning it into a new compound, Chemical Z.
About that time, the Mayor contacts them with terrible news-- there is a huge, random ice-meteor about to crash into Tokyo! =O
So naturally, having just created Chemical Z, and having no knowledge of what it is/does, Ken decides to load it into a giant ray gun and use it to demolish the meteor. Itshockingly works, but the meteor explodes into a multitude of little light particles, some white and some black, which rain down over the city.
This is how the Powerpuff Girls are created, my being struck by the little white particles; meanwhile, one of the black ones crashes into the zoo, hitting a monkey, and thusly Mojo Jojo is born. At the same time, another white piece falls back and hits the digital dog, Peach, who then suddenly gains the ability to speak!
The girls themselves are all "created" sepparately, each in different parts of the city. In the original series, they're sisters, created from nothing by the Professor, using "sugar, spice and everything nice" in combination with Chemical X-- but in PPG Z, they're already girls, who just gain superpowers and the ability to transform. (Bubbles is referred to by some people as "Miyano" and Buttercup as "Kaoru", but I don't know if that's their last names or what. The only name that Blossom has been called is "Blossom", unless I missed something...)
As far as characters go, they're generally close to the originals in personalty... but there are some huge differences, too.
Blossom is obsessed with snacks/sweets, for example, and seems more tenacious than I remember her being. She's supposed to be very smart, but they haven't shown her in school or anything, so I don't know if they changed that, too. Bubbles, meanwhile, is very polite and charming, but seems a lot more mature than she should be. She's also got a preoccupation with clothes. Buttercup seems closest to what she should be, but she's only been in a couple of short scenes, so... we'll see, I guess.
All three of them are in middle school (I think? Possibly the elder grades of elementary...), and not even close to the kindergartener-age that they were in the original Powerpuff Girls. And when they transform, they have these strage weapons... Blossom uses a Yo-Yo, Bubbles uses a Bubble Wand, and Buttercup uses a Huge Mallet.
Everyone shouts out attacks, which I guess is typical for magical girl anime. >^-^;;
The Mayor is much more mature than he should be. ^^; Miss Bellum (who is blonde in PPG Z, instead of a redhead) is supposed to be the one who actually runs things from the background, but in PPG Z, the Mayor actually seems relatively competant-- I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I was, however, pleased that they've stuck with hiding Miss Bellum's face, as they did in the original.
What I miss the most is Mojo's rambling; he doesn't do it. But I'm not sure if that's because they made a conscious decision to leave it out, or because that kind of thing doesn't translate well into Japanese? It could be something like that.
Also, the Professor, whilst checking Blossom and Bubbles out to figure out what was going on with them, used a ray gun thing, and then declared that "Ah! To transform we need to get Peach to shout "Powerpuff Girls Z!"" ... And I was like "How did the ray gun help you figure out a completely random name like 'Powerpuff Girls Z'?" O_o; But whatever...
Anyway. It's a cute series, but totally different. ^^; If you try to compare it to the original, you start to develop a facial tick...
