I keep saying I'm going to write in this thing regularly like I used to, and then I never do. I'm not really sure why; health problems lately, depression and anxiety, financial issues? I guess I've just been distracted by other things, my mind isn't on doing random journal entries, which is stupid because writing in my LJ always helps me work through things that are happening in my life. =/

In any case, I have been updating my writing blog ([livejournal.com profile] vanimadin); I set it up a while back and have been using it quite a bit. I can't remember if I ever mentioned it here before.

I've also FINALLY been updating the Esprit Studios blog ([livejournal.com profile] espritstudios) after like a year of nothing. >>; This is (hopefully) a precursor to me finally getting the ES etsy shop up and running full capacity. It's a long process, though, as I have to photograph and catalog all of the items and then take the time to post them in the LJ and list them in the shop.

I've also been slowly but steadily working toward actually getting somewhere with House Of Yum. Working on a plan toward an actual, credible business is very hard and complicated, but I'm hoping it will all be worthwhile in the end. Fingers crossed, right?

Other than that, I've finally decided that I'm going to bite the bullet and pay for a gym membership. I've pretty much come as far as I can with my fitness on my own, and I need access to the facilities a gym would offer. I'm thinking probably the YMCA, both because it has disability discounts and because it offers use of the pool and various sporting areas as well as the typical weights that other gyms offer.

This of course means that I have to somehow AFFORD a membership as well as actual workout clothes. At least I already have decent runners? So I need to go out to Sport Check or wherever and do some pricing, too. Oh, and I need to check and see if I have a bathing suit that fits. .__.; Almost forgot about that.

Oh, and since I haven't updated recently I guess I never posted about Lily, Ven or Opal. :D

Lily: Another kitten. Dad brought her up from the farm, where her mother had abandoned her when she was about 2 weeks old. They found her by the middle barn and Lois bottle fed her for about a month before they passed her to me. She's a tiny little tabby, and when she arrived she looked like she was still 2 weeks old, even though she was actually 6 weeks. She was, and still is, EXTREMELY stunted with her growth and development because she was booted from her mama at such a young age. She's a handful. But being here with the other cats, lots of attention and as much food as she can possibly cram into her little kitty belly, she is catching up in leaps and bounds. Lils will never be the biggest cat. She'll always be small and delicate. But she's healthy and happy and robust now, so it's all good. ♥

Ven: My new rat, named after Ventus from KH: BBS. I unfortunately had to put down my last rat (Roxy, named after Roxas from KH) just a couple of days before I left for the US back in the summer. I was very sad about that, Roxy was a special little rattie and I loved her to bits. And I've had rats pretty much always since 2005 when I got my first one (Yuki). I really love the little guys, they're so smart and loving and adorable. They make great pets. So when I got back here from the US, I went and picked out a new little rat. He's white with a blonde-cream hood, and he lives up to his name by being a total trusting derp. He's a darling and I luff him. :3

Opal: Third snake's the charm! I've still got Aya, of course, and he's doing perfectly fine, but one day I went into J&K and was looking around and ZOMG! they had the most gorgeous snake I had ever seen. Opal is an albino reverse-stripe kingsnake. (You can find albino kingsnake pics here. Some of them are reverse-stripe and some aren't. I should really just upload some pics of Opal. :P) She's still quite young so she's only about two feet long. She'll probably end up around six feet, but kingsnakes are like garters, they get looooong but stay relatively skinny. Right now she's in the small terrarium (the one Aya started out in and Nyoka was in until she escaped and subsequently, yanno, DIED. *facepalm*) but eventually I'll have to upgrade her to one similar in size to what Aya is currently living in. Ah, her full name is "Opalescence", but w/e I just call her Opal. :P

Still want to try another sand boa, and I plan on getting a tarantula at some point. I'm finding keeping non-mammals very interesting. The snakes/turtle/fish/etc, are all very different from the cats and rabbits. Fascinating, really. ♥

Oh, also? MLP: Friendship Is Magic. I've been sucked in. SO RANDOM AND ADDICTING. [/is cosplaying Princess Luna at Otakon next year.]

Vegetarian lasagna, by far. ♥ And I make really good ricotta-and-spinach Canelloni as well, which is similar to the lasagna (but with fewer ingredients.)

Then again, technically those both have eggs and cheese in them. So I guess it depends on what degree of vegetarianism you're talking about. Haha.

RIP.

Just got an email from Mom. Or, rather, I just looked at an email from Mom. She sent it a couple hours ago, but I was out at the mall with Maddie and Chloe so I didn't get it until we got home a few minutes ago.

Uncle Lawrence died. It was his 80th birthday and he had a heart attack.

I guess Grandma was down in Arkansaw visiting Uncle Bob and Aunt Jean (Jean has cancer and has only a few months to go) and then on the way back she stopped to visit Uncle Lawrence for his birthday, and then this happened. She's still in Niagara now, helping to plan the funeral and everything...

Mom says she's likely to go down to Niagara for the funeral on Tuesday. I wish I could go, but it's just not possible. I hope everything goes well.

I'm very worried about Grandma, though; she lost one of her sisters just a couple years back, then Grandpa died of cancer, and now her other sister is dying of cancer as well, and her brother just passed away. That's probably why Mom is so adamant she'll be there for the funeral. Grandma probably couldn't handle this by herself...

That's it for now.

I'm working on a full Otakon-and-etc. update and hopefully it'll be posted soonish.

Been on the bus for 12 hours, which is much better than 26 the first year I came down to the States. I slept most of the trip this time anyway, since I didn't sleep the night before. Had too much to do; in the afternoon I took the town bus to Mom's place to do laundry, and when Mom got off work she had a coffee and then we went to my apartment to start organizing and moving the animals. Somehow, though spacial magic I only partially understand, we managed to fit everything in only two trips with Mom's little car. We were channeling Houdini or something, idk. So we settled the rabbits and cats at their temporary home in Mom's basement and then had dinner, after which we went back out so I could pick up rabbit/cat litter and a couple other misc. odds-and-sods that I needed to before I left. After that we went back so I could finish my laundry and then Mom took me home.

With the cats out from underfoot, I took the opportunity to clean and vacuum the house. YAY CLEAN FLOORS AND STUFF. I also did some baking; Broken Glass Torte for Dad (does that count as baking? XD;) and fruit loaf as well. It started off as banana bread to use up the bananas before I left, then I ended up adding pineapple, then cherries, then coconut. Then I realized I didn't have any flour. *facepalm* So I had to improvise and used my Magic Bullet to make corn and oat flour instead. It worked fine, just took less time to bake through and didn't rise as much as if I'd used white flour. So whatever. I made four loaves, so I took one to Mom and brought one with me for Dad and Lois as well. Baking done, I did the dishes, then continued cleaning. Then at like 3am I finally started packing for my trip. xD; Way to procrastinate, right? I know, I know.

Anyway, packing took FOREVER as usual, especially since it took me an entire hour to decide which beads I was going to bring with me. >>; Last year I managed to limit myself to like four boxes, plus a box of charms/pendants and a box of findings. Um. Yeah. This year? Like twelve boxes of beads, plus a big box of charms, a big box of pendants, and three boxes of findings. I fail, what can I say? I also had to pack Maddie and Chloe's Christmas and Birthday presents that I never got around to mailing. Because I also fail at THAT, too. So like half of my luggage this time is made up of stuff that I brought down for them. Then there's my cosplay stuff as well. I actually pack very light for ME, it's just that I can't go anywhere without bringing copious amounts of STUFF for other people and projects. ^_^;

So, having not slept a wink all night, Dad picked me and my luggage up atound 9am. We went out to the res for him to get smokes, then back into town so I could stop at Mom's and drop of my keys (so that she can get into my apartment to feed Genbu and Aya and the fish) and her vacuum (which I had borrowed the night before.) She and Lee were up, so I said a quick goodbye to them and then we were on our way. The trip from Orillia to Georgetown was mostly uneventful. Except for the massive detour because of an earlier car accident on the highway, our brakes almost going out because of sitting on them so much in stop-and-go-traffic, and a short stop at Toys R' Us in Mississagua. TOYS. YAY. Dad found something for his Star Wars collection, and I got come LPS for my own, as well as some animal erasers because SO CUTE OMG SQUEE. I also wanted a Transformers Ravage figure, but I managed to resist. Mostly by reminding myself that anything I bought there I would have to haul down to the US and back again lol.

Oh, note to self: 12th line outside of Orillia? FUCKING FULL TO BURSTING WITH CRAB APPLES. GET MOM TO TAKE YOU OUT THERE IN SEPTEMBER.

At the kennel, there was a little Lang family get together for one of Lois' granddaughters' birthday. It was slightly awkward for me to be there, but they were all nice to me. I did get some weird looks from the kids, though, since they had never met me before. Plus my hair cut is totally like a dude's now. But in general it was fine. After they left I got to talk with Lois some, which I always enjoy. But around 7 I HAD to lie down for a nap. I just hit the wall and couldn't keep going. My body was suddenly like "I QUIT". So I crashed on the living room couch for two hours. Then at 9pm I got back up so we could get underway.

Dad and Lois have accuired some dogs who aren't poms in the last year. First was Maggie, a pug/boxer cross that Lois' mother bought and then decided she didn't want, so Lois offered to take her. Then there was Lucy, a little Jack Russell who is really thin and lankey compared to most Jacks. Then a couple months ago they got another Jack, Sadie, who was half-starved and hadn't had any real affection or anything in her entire life. The pics from the day they first picked her up are just sad; she was so thin her ribs and spine stuck out. Poor thing. But she's all chubby and happy now, so it's all good. While Lucy has attached herself to Lois, Sadie has adopted Dad. And Dad is absolutely head-over-heels in love with her. But to be fair, Sadie is the suckiest, most friendly, affectionate little dog you could ever imagine. <3

Anyway, since the market for poms isn't great right now and the market for Jacks is still decent, they decided to give a litter of Jacks a try, so they went out and found a male, Max, who is the newest addition to the pack. Sort of. Because he's unaltered he has to stay in the kitchen and can't run with the girls or EVERYONE would be pregnant, including every human leg who happened too close. lol. Max is a sweetheart, but a little excitable. In more than one way. Haha. They plan to try breeding him to Maggie next year for some cross pups, and then Lucy the year after that. Sadie won't be old enough to breed safely for a couple of years yet, but she's the one that they're really looking forward to getting puppies from since her personality is so perfect. I guess we'll see!

Right now they have one litter of tiny itty bitty pom puppies that are RIGHT AT THE EPITOME OF CUTENESS. Two blacks, a cream (with siamese-like points and some white markings) and an orange-sable. (Their mother is black; idk about their father. It was this pairing that spawned the Parti Poms earlier this year.) They're maybe two weeks old, can see and hear and toddle around a little, but are generally just chubby round little poofy things that lay around with tubby milk!bellies and kind of resemble miniscule bear cubs. SO FREAKING ADORABLE. And they're all friendly as hell, and their mom has no trouble letting you reach in to pet them. Which is good because I spent a good amount of time smishing me some little pups and cooing at them and letting them suck on my nose and chin. X3 Dad says he'll take some pics so I can share. You guys. Seriously. You can't even comprehend the level of OMGCUTE!!1! these dogs are without seeing them. I WILL SHARE, AND YOU WILL SQUEE YOURSELVES TO DEATH I SWEAR.

If they weren't way too young to be sepparated from their mom, I would have been seriously tempted to try smuggling one of them out in my pocket. Heh.

Anyhow, around 9pm Dad and I took off and drove into Toronto so I could catch my bus. We even only got a tiny bit lost! And when we got to the terminal Dad hung around with me until it was time for my bus to board, then he headed home. He did call a few minutes later, though, just to make sure I was on board and on my way fine. Then the 12 hour ride commenced, but to be honest I only remember about 1/4 of it because it was dark and the bus was moving and I just fell asleep.

Ugh, US customs was a pain in the ass this year. And yet at the same time, managed to be really polite and friendly about it. It was weird.

First, the guy almost didn't let me into "his country" because of my passport photo. That one I had anticipated being a problem, since my passport photo was taken back when I was 260+ pounds. I've lost over a hundred pounds AND cut all my hair off since I had it taken, so it doesn't really look like me anymore. But eventually he decided the photo was workable, he just highly reccommended that I get a new one before next summer. Then he balked because I only have $300 US cash on me. WELL WHAT? I have more money, just not IN CASH ON MY PERSON. JEEZ. He was like "how are you going to support yourself while you're down there? $300 won't even feed one person for a whole month!" but I explained about the money situation and staying with friends and etc etc etc and he finally gave in... only to ask if I "had something to be nervous about". Because my hands were shaking. *FACEPALM*

I told him it was because of blood sugar, because that was esier than explaining that I SHAKE LIKE A CHIHUAHUA ON SPEED. ALL THE TIME. FOR NO REASON. So, that sorted... he wanted to know if I had any reason to return to Canada. I was like "...bwuh?" But apparently, because I'm not working, he was concerned I was going to just, yanno, STAY in the US and not go back to Canadaland. Forever. So what proof did I have that I would be going home after the trip? We finally decided that my family and pets were relatively decent reasons. At which point he demanded to know about Maddie and Chloe's home and job statuses, and expressed concerns for me being able to support myself (AGAIN) since neither of them has a full-time job. ASDGH. I was starting to get frustrated by then. I mean really, really frustrated.

I just smiled anyway.

But I finally did get out of there and on to baggage check, which is always interesting because of the weird shit I bring with me for cosplay and stuff. At least the baggage checkers usually get a laugh or two out of it. They take their jobs seriously, but not nearly as seriously as the guys asking the initial questions. =/ In any case, the guy checking my bags only had a problem with my snacks. He took my apple, my cherries, and my cherry tomatoes. Boooooo. But oh well. They're easily replaceable. And he didn't even make a mess of my bags like most customs guys do. I didn't have to reorganize anything at all! (...until later when my backpack kicked the bucket. Then I had to transfer my lunch stuff into another bag and just chucked the backpack in the trash. It was a dollar store one anyway, so meh.)

So, that done, back on the bus and on with the trip! ...so basically, more sleeping. lmao.

At Detroit, though, I had a stopover for an hour until my next bus came in. I got to talking to one of the girls that had been on the last bus and was going to be on the next one. Tyra was super nice and we got along great. So we chatted for the rest of the stopover and then on the bus some before both of us decided we needed to sleep some more. She got off two stops before I got off in Dayton, but we exchanged info so we can get ahold of each other later. ^^ That was once thing about the first year I came down here; I met that girl, Z, on the bus, and we got along great, but I forgot to get her email. I still kind of regret that. =/

But, all in all, it was a pretty good trip. I got in here at Dayton around 1pm and have been waiting for Maddie and Chloe while I've been writing this entry. Maddie had a test to do or whatever so they couldn't be here to meet me when I got in. But that's fine. I have Squall with me, so I've kept busy, and they're on their way now. Should be here any minute! ...and Squall is yelling at me that his battery is low. And I have to go to the bathroom. So I guess I'm done this journal. XD;;

Also? Damn you lack of willpower. And having the space now. And having lost Tri back in the winter.

...yeaaah, I should NOT be allowed near Free Kitten signs in any context. >>;

But I guess... well, I had a free space again since Tri is gone, plus I have a ton of room here, and on top of that now I know I can get them spayed/neutered and get them their shots really cheap through the Barrie SPCA. If I had to try to afford all that at the regular vet it would be upwards of $1000 by the time I was done, and I wouldn't have brought them home.

Anyway, the one in the foreground is Vesta; named after the Roman Goddess of the Hearth and Harvest. Ves is a girl and her colour is brindle (she has one cream glove on her front left paw, which is adorable. ♥) She has kind of brown-green eyes right now, but I think they're probably going to end up totally green by the time they're done changing colour. Ves is really spunky and seems to love to climb on things. And by "things" I mean "me". She climbs up clothing and then clings to the back of my neck or my head, which is really cute and funny NOW, but I imagine I should break her of that habit before she gets too much bigger. ^^;

The mostly behind Ves is Nio; named after the Gods in Japanese myth who traveled with Buddah to protect him. (Technically, the o should have a - over it, but I can't figure out how to do that on my keyboard. =/) Nio is a boy and almost completely black with about a dozen white hairs on his little belly. His eyes are kind of hazel right now. I think they might end up brown or goldish. He's quite rambunctious as well, but not nearly as much as Vesta. He's a lot more laid back. She pushes him around quite a bit, actually, even though she's smaller. XD;;

They're sister and brother from the same litter, and I just picked them up today. They've settled in quite nicely, though for now they're confined to the bedroom. I've given them their worming meds today, and I was giving all the cats their spring flea treatment today anyway, so they got treated for that as well (I had extra kitten Advantage since Tia is so small she still has to use that instead of the Advantage for adult cats. lol.) Now they're chilling in here, and in a few days I'll let them out to start exploring the rest of the house and terrorizing the other cats. ♥

They are IMPOSSIBLE to get pics of right now, hence the somewhat dubious one here. They don't stay still long enough for me to snap a photo unless they're asleep, and they've taken to sleeping on the spare blankets under the bed. (Not that I blame them, it's really cozy under there, really.) I managed to get this little pic when they were snoozing under the dresser instead, before they discovered they could get under the bed.

Right.

On a somewhat-related note, I'm finally burying Tri this weekend. I asked Grandma a while back if I could bury him somewhere on her property and she said yes, but until now we haven't been able to because of snow/frost and then rain. This weekend is supposed to be nice, so Mom and my brother and I are going to go up and take care of it.

That's not going to be a good day for me, I already know that. But coming home and cuddling kittens will probably help me feel a little better. And their antics are pretty cute and distracting.

Anyhow, a real update soon, I promise. Also, pics of the new place since it's about 75% organized now. Yep.

EDIT: The image is kind of big... if it messes up anyone's friends page let me know and I'll make it smaller or put it under a cut or something.
senashenta: (Idiot Savant)
HOKAY. I haven't updated in forever but I swear I have a good reason for it. ~A~;;

1) Basically, a little less than a month ago, I got a call from one of Mom's friends that she works with; she and her husband own a bunch of buildings around town that have been converted into apartments, and they had one come up available for the 1st of June.

I went O__O;; because it's totally last minute and I couldn't afford it really, between having to pay first and last and for the movers. Anyway, Mom convinced me to go look at the place anyway... and it's PERFECT. ;A; I was all *GRABBY HANDS* at it, but came home knowing I just wasn't going to be able to deal with the cost.

But when I told Mom all about the place, she kind of made the decision for me and made some calls to Grandma so that she and Mom could help me cover the moving costs. It's a lot of money, but she assured me that this is NOT a loan, it's a gift. Because she wants me out of her house. XD; lol. Not really, but the joking at least made me feel better. I hate having to take money from other people. =_=;;

Anyway, the apartment!

It's basically half of a house. It has a tiny postage-stamp front yard and a picket fence along the side that I'm going to hang flower baskets from. It also has a little strip of grass at the bottom of the fence that I'm going to line with planters as well. I WANT A GARDEN AGAIN, EVEN IF IT'S JUST A TINY ONE. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO HAVE ONE IN YEARS.

Then the screen door leads into a tiny little sunroom/mudroom where I can keep my recycle bins, trash can, and shovel/salt in the winter. Then the next door is the main one, and it leads into the downstairs part of the apartment. This is supposed to just be an entryway, but it's big enough that I can use it for that purpose AND as another actual room, as well as possibly for some minor storage. I'm considering putting my craft workspace for beading and the like down there once I find another desk.

Then to get to the main apartment, you go up a nice wide staircase. At the top is a bit of wall (a bookshelf will go there), and then the bathroom, which is of course small, but totally nice and clean and modern. ♥

Next is the kitchen, WHICH IS BIG ENOUGH TO FIT MY HUGE 4-FOOT FREEZER AND A TABLE. It's not gigantic, but it's easily at least 4x the size of my last two kitchens, and probably twice the size of the kitchen here at Mom's. She's going to be jealous. XD!

After the kitchen is the bedroom, which is maybe 1/4 again the size of the kitchen. Again, not huge, but still bigger than my room here. In there is going my bed, my reading books, my dresser, Aya's terrarium, the other snake terrarium (I'm getting another sand boa in a few months) and either the piranha tank or the turtle tank (I'm leaning toward the piranha.)

The next room is the living room, which is a little bigger than the bedroom. There goes the sofa, rocking chair, movie shelves, TV stand & etc, reference books and probably the turtle tank. Also the end tables and the goldfish aquarium once I get it set up. FISHIES! X3

Next to the living room and at the end of the hall is a SECOND little sunroom, which is where the bunnies are going to live, where the kitty litter box is going, and where my little indoor-herb-garden will go, as well as my upside-down strawberry planters and tomato planter. The plants will looooove it in there!

And on the wall just outside the second sunroom will be the pet shelves/cabinets where the food and etc. will be kept, and one shelf of those is where the tarantula terrarium will go. And that's it! :D

I'm so excited! I'll take pics and post them once I've gotten all moved in. ♥

2) Mom and Lee... are in Hawaii right now. *EPIC FISTSHAKE* DAMN YOU, PARENTS! Haha, no, I'm kidding. It's their 20th anniversary this year and they NEVER take vacations. They deserve it. And Hawaii is somewhere they both have wanted to go forever, so good for them! They're seeing the cultural center and touring Pearl Harbour, and they're going to go through the international market.

I told them they had to do the following:

1) Go to Pearl Harbour.
2) See a luau.
3) Buy me an awesome souvenir.
and 4) Not get eaten by a shark. O__O;;

3) My new turtle, Genbu! The one that I rescued a few weeks back. Until now, he's been living in a TINY terrarium that is WAY too small for him, the poor guy. But I didn't have anywhere else to keep him. At least he had a little pond and lots of food, right? I still felt guilty though.

Anyway, the pet store downtown that I got Aya from have an indoor pond that has some turtles in it about Genbu's size. Today I was downtown and I asked the owner if he might be willing to take Genbu and add him to the pond so that he would be living in the proper conditions. I explained the situation and everything.

He apologized but had to say no. Turns out like a week ago he went to a turtle rescue out of town and adopted three more turtles for the pond, so now he has six; and this maxes out the pond. He can't put any more turtles in there or it will be too crowded. He said that if he had the room he definitely would have taken him, though.

I told him it was okay, but kind of sighed because it's not that I don't want to KEEP Genbu, it's just not fair to him to have to live in such a tiny unsuitable terrarium. =/

So the owner kind of looked at me for a minute, and then told me that he admires what I'm trying to do, so he's going to DONATE a 170 GALLON TANK for FREE so that I can give Genbu the kind of home he needs. ;A; That is the kind of thing the people from that store do. They genuinely CARE about animals. It's not just a business to them.

I thanked him a million times, obviously. I still have to buy the filter for it, but that's a tiny amount of money in comparison. He even said he would deliver it to the new apartment once I've moved! It was so incredible...

I WILL CONTINUE TO SHOP FOR MY ANIMALS FROM THAT STORE FOR AS LONG AS THEY ARE IN BUSINESS.

4) Today I went downtown intending to go to Blockbuster to look at previously viewed movies, but when the bus arrived at the main street... there was a sidewalk sale going on. O_o;

Twice every summer we have a massive sidewalk sale where the main street is closed off and all kinds of vendors set up shop for the weekend. It's always fun and nice to wander around and look at everything. I usually spend $20 or so and bring apples for the ponies at the pony rides they set up for the kids. ♥

Anyway, so rather than just go to Blockbuster and then home, I ended up meandering around. I talked to the pet shop owner (see above lol) and got to pet their store mascot, Calvin the alligator.

I got a candy and chocolate cookbook, a set of meditation balls, and a couple cheap used DVDs from a bin (The Rats and Darkness Falls.) I also got a couple of leather bracelets for cosplay later this summer, as well as some phone straps for peeps I have packages for. And one of the booths gave me some free popcorn, which was deliciously yummy and buttery. :3

Haha, I did end up going to Blockbuster afterward, though, and I picked up copies of Skyline, Planet Terror, Paranormal Activity 2, Arachnia and Resident Evil: Afterlife for really cheap. Yay movies~!

5) AND! So, to raise some more money for Otakon and the 'States this summer, I've decided to have a huge bake sale. ^_^ I can break in my kitchen and have fun and hopefully make some spare cash at the same time. And then anything I don't manage to sell I can freeze or give away to family/friends or to the various charities around town. ♥

senashenta: (Do I Have To CHOKE A BITCH?)
Today Mom, Lee and I went to the 400 market just past Barrie. We don't get to go very often, so I was really looking forward to it. :3

I did a lot of odds-and-ends shopping, but I guess the notable things were DVDs (16 of them at $2/each! o.o!!), some decorative candies for baking and some more fish for my aquarium. 4 ciclids and 24 rosies. ♥

Now, the fish place at the 400 market. I was paying for the ciclids (I bought the rosies elsewhere) when I noticed a tank in the back. It was completely empty and dry as a bone, with just a lonely red-eared slider turtle huddled in the middle. There was a sign on the tank that said "free turtle".

The fact that he was in a completely dry tank didn't sit well with me, so I asked why they were giving him away. I was told that he was blind, a family pet and they didn't want him anymore. Then they proceeded to tell me that IF NO ONE TOOK HIM THEY WERE JUST GOING TO TOSS HIM INTO THE DUMPSTER OUT BACK. >[

It was like five minutes until the place closed, so I begged a box off of them and took him with me. I couldn't just let him get thrown out like trash! He's perfectly healthy except he can't see! SO WHAT?

I was pretty much IRATE, but I wanted them to give him to me so I didn't say anything. Just took him and thanked them and headed off.

Once home, he stayed in the box long enough for me to set up a makeshift terrarium (it has a "pool" made out of a big tupperware container) and then he was introduced. He's settling in slowly, but hasn't left his little pond yet. I think he's just happy to have access to WATER again. How long was he in that dry aquarium? Did they EVER have him in proper housing? >/

Anyway, I'm going to call him Genbu. I picked up some turtle food, but he hasn't eaten. I think he's still upset, which I can't blame him for. But since he's blind I may have to end up picking up some feeding tongs and hand-feeding him every day. I'm hoping not, but if I have to I most certainly will.

After we left the market, Lee wanted to go to Moores for some dress pants and right nearby was a Petsmart, so rather than stand around while he browsed, I went to the pet store. They were having a cat adopt-a-thon, so I made kissy faces at all the kittehs, and that's where I got the rosies for my aquarium as well.

All in all, aside from the fucking STUPIDITY of the people I rescued Genbu from, it was a pretty good day. :)

senashenta: (Blue Hearts Bunny)

I feel very strongly about this. I know that rabbits aren't the only animal this happens with, but especially this time of year it happens WAY too much with bunnies. In two weeks from now, the animal shelters will be inundated with rabbits that people have bought for their children for Easter. Not that they mean to do this, of course, but most people are woefully uninformed when it comes to rabbits.

Rabbits are adorable and loving animals, but they aren't like hamsters; they require a lot more specialized care that most people have no idea about, so when it turns out that the new bunny is much more work and more of a pain than they had expected, or messier, or noisier, or whatever, they take the poor things to the shelter, where many of them end up put down.

I'll even admit that when I got my first bunny, I was misguided in what I thought I knew about them. But as I got to know Phantom and did research about rabbits in general I found myself falling in love with the critters more and more, which lead to me eventually having the five that I have now. I wouldn't trade them for anything, but they definitely aren't a great pet for small children, or a "starter pet".

tl;dr? BUY YOUR KIDS CHOCOLATE BUNNIES FOR EASTER INSTEAD.

And now I'll get off my soap box again.

Wow, yeah, I haven't posted for real in forever. I definitely need to get back into posting. Gonna try for at least a small entry here every day. HEre's hoping. xD;;

Anyway!

My magic bean plant loves it in this room. It's grown over a foot since I got here, and tonight I had to actually straighten a clothes hanger to use as a post because it's getting so tall it isn't standing straight anymore. XD So I used the hanger and tied the plant to it, then decorated it with some silver chain and white beads. ♥

I've been working on setting up my writing blog again, since GJ crashed and burned a while back. Thus I give you [livejournal.com profile] vanimadin. I loooove the layout so much. Please go friend me, especially if you have writing blogs of you own. I love sharing creative stuff like that~

Oh, and I'm also working on my RP Musebox as well, [livejournal.com profile] vilyaore. I'm in the process of switching it to a community and everything, so it'll be a couple weeks before it's all done, but I'm getting there. I've been meaning to set up a musebox for a long time now, I've just been way too busy with moving and cats and the wedding and everything. ~.~;

BUT. THE WEDDING.

Went off without a hitch, pretty much. ^_^ I was so glad to get the jewelry done though, lol. The jewelry for the two bridesmaids and the flower girl was simple enough to make, but Sarah's jewelry was A PAIN. I had to make her necklace, rip it apart, and remake it THREE TIMES over the course of two months. It was the bane of my existence.

At the same time? I'm SO proud of it. It turned out awesome. X3

But it was a lovely, simple wedding, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I got to see some family that I hadn't seen in a long time, plus meet my other sister's girlfriend (she is SUPER nice and very pretty!) and my eldest brother's girlfriend (also SUPER nice and pretty, and I was INSTANTLY comfortable with her, which almost never happens.) The dinner was really good (roast beef/ham/beef lasagna/veggie lasagna/etc. I had the veggie lasagna with ceasar salad.) And they had lots of yummy deserts too. CREAMPUFFS FTW. That was before the wedding cake later in the night.

Plus, of course, I was so happy for Sarah and her new hubby. Everything was great. :)

So I did the jewelry, then took wedding photos (the lighting was AWFUL, but I can adjust that and fix any photos that need it on the computer), and I also made some mix CDs for when the band wasn't playing. We didn't end up using them much, but it was good to have them just in case.

I couldn't stay for the whole reception, though. I started to have a panic attack because of the crowds, so Mom took me home. It's too bad, but I wasn't surprised when it happened. Ah well.

Wedding aside, not much else has really happened other than the stuff with Tia's spay and everything. The wedding was on the 15th, though, and I'm only now starting to finally wind down from all the stress. =/

Aaaaand I guess as a last completely random note, I've decided I want one of these to add to my collectibles. They're kapala skulls. I don't want a REAL one, a replica would of course do just as well. I just think they're amazingly (and morbidly) beautiful, and I would love to have one. Haha. I have funny tastes, what can I say? xD
